Buying advice
Outdoor Knives
Choosing the right outdoor knife is crucial for comfort and safety when spending time in nature. Whether you are an avid hiker, hunter, or bushcraft enthusiast, a quality knife will give you confidence in any situation. In the following lines, we will look at how to choose the right piece, which materials are most suitable, and how to care for your knife to ensure it serves you for as long as possible.
How to Choose the Right Outdoor Knife
When selecting a knife, it is important to primarily consider its intended use. For everyday carry and light tasks in nature, such as opening packages or cutting fruit, a folding knife with a blade length of 8–10 cm will suffice. If you plan more demanding activities, like processing wood for kindling, preparing food over a fire, or building a shelter, opt for a fixed-blade knife with a length of 10–15 cm. Handle ergonomics are also important – materials like G10, Micarta, or rubberized plastic ensure a secure grip even in wet conditions or when working with gloves. For hunters, a drop-point blade is key, allowing for precise skinning and meat cutting without damaging the tissue. For bushcraft, you will appreciate a knife with a blade thickness of 4–5 mm, capable of chopping branches or carving notches in wood. Do not forget the locking mechanism – for folding models, a liner lock or frame lock is preferred for maximum safety during use.
Blade Types and Their Uses
A straight blade is suitable for precise cutting, while a curved (drop point) blade offers more control for skinning or slicing. For bushcraft, knives with a blade thickness of 3–5 mm are ideal, capable of handling chopping tasks. Do not forget the locking mechanism – for folding models, a liner lock or frame lock is preferred for maximum safety. In hunting knives, you will often encounter Damascus steel, which stands out not only for its strength but also for its unique pattern.
Quality and Materials
You can recognize a quality outdoor knife by the steel used. Stainless steels, such as 440C or Sandvik 14C28N, are corrosion-resistant and easy to sharpen, which you will appreciate with frequent use in damp environments. For maximum hardness and long edge retention, tool steels (e.g., D2 or 1095) are suitable, but they require regular maintenance – they need to be cleaned and oiled after each use to prevent corrosion. Handles made from natural materials, such as wood or bone, give the knife an aesthetic look but require more care – wood can crack under extreme temperatures or humidity. Synthetic materials, like nylon or G10, are more practical and weather-resistant, while also offering a non-slip surface. When choosing, also consider the knife's weight – lighter models are suitable for hiking, while heavier ones are better for heavy camp work.
Blade Finish
A black coating (e.g., DLC or epoxy) reduces light reflection and protects the steel from corrosion, which is useful for hunting or in harsh conditions. A polished blade, on the other hand, is easier to maintain and suitable for precision work, such as filleting fish. Survival knives often feature a stonewash finish, which masks scratches and increases abrasion resistance.
Maintenance and Care
To ensure your knife lasts for many years, it needs to be cleaned of dirt and moisture after each use. Stainless steels can simply be wiped with a dry cloth; carbon steels require light oiling – for example, with mineral oil, which does not affect the taste of food. Sharpen as needed – a ceramic sharpener is sufficient for regular touch-ups, while for restoring the edge, we recommend diamond stones with a grit of 400–1000. Store the knife in a dry environment, ideally in a sheath or protective case. This will prevent unwanted contact with other metals that could cause micro-scratches. For long-term storage, we recommend regularly checking and re-oiling the knife, especially if it is made of carbon steel.
